The selections on this recording come from a substantial body of work created by composers who left Europe for the United States during the 1930s. Four of the exiles featured here were Austrian – Schönberg, Toch, Korngold and Zeisl, and the remaining one, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, was Italian.
Along with over 30,000 other European intellectuals and artists, all came to settle in the Los Angeles area when, for a time, Southern California was transformed into one of the cultural capitals of the world.
